Portrait of an artist: Tammam Azzam

Since 15 March 2011 Syria has been turned into a spectacle. At the beginning, it was a spectacle of hope and defiance: people marching in the streets, chanting with their hands raised, painting colored slogans, and celebrating the will to live and their right to dignity and freedom. Yet, too soon the peaceful demonstrations were turned into a spectacle of blood and death that we had to witness through the countless user-generated videos distributed on YouTube. Violence took over everything else, together with the indiscriminate killing and barbarism committed against human beings, cities, heritage sites, and nature.
